In this post we speak with playwright Steven Simoncic about his play Heat Wave, and its current production by Cold Basement Dramatics as part of the Steppenwolf Garage Rep. Based on the non-fiction work by Eric Klinenberg, Heat Wave explores issues of class, race and survival through the stories of the Chicagoans who lived through the 1995 heat wave.
Simoncic is a prolific playwright whose plays have received international and national productions, readings and workshops at theatres including: The Goodman Theatre, Victory Gardens Theatre, The Side Project, Pegasus Players, The Soho Theatre in London, The Beckett Theatre and Stageplays Theatre. His work has garnered many awards and honors, including a Pushcart Prize nomination, and the recent win of an Emmy.
Simoncic was selected as a semi-finalist for the 2013 Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference, a finalist in the 37th Annual Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival, and won the NAAA Playwriting Festival in London.
