MOXIE Theatre presents...
BLISS (or Emily Post is Dead!) by Jami Brandli
Jan 28 – Feb 25
Housewives are dutiful. Husbands are brawny. It’s 1960 and Emily Post’s guide to etiquette is keeping America “great.” But in a delicious turn of events, a stranger materializes who might end life as the citizens of North Orange know it. This audacious Joint World Premiere reimagines the tragic heroines of Greek Mythology as pill-popping housewives in a cautionary tale with deadly consequences.
Greek Gods Meet Seething Suburbanites in ‘BLISS’ at Moxie Theatre
The fun of “BLISS (or Emily Post is Dead!)” is the mashup of Greek mythology and modern-day sensibility, set in the “Mad Men” era, on the cusp of the battles for women’s rights and civil rights...Brandli could not wish for a better production for her joint world premiere (after San Diego, separate productions will be mounted in L.A. and Chicago). Here, the piece is in the hands of the gifted, insightful former Moxie artistic director Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, who has marshaled a splendid ensemble and encouraged them to create juicy, multi-layered characters. Smart, snappy 'Bliss' gives tragic heroines a hopeful future
Playwright Jami Brandli smartly upends theatrical history this month in her hilarious, sharply written and fast-paced comedy-drama “Bliss (or Emily Post is Dead!),” which opened Saturday at Moxie Theatre in a world premiere co-production with L.A.’s Moving Arts and Chicago’s Promethean Theatre.
